We shape a better world

Arup is a global firm of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants providing a diverse range of professional services to clients around the world. Through our innovative and fully-integrated approach, which brings our full complement of skills and knowledge to bear on any given design problem, we exert a significant influence on the built environment. We are the creative force behind many of the world's most innovative and sustainable designs. We work in more than 90 offices in over 35 countries. We bring a new approach to creating sustainable communities and economies, supported by robust infrastructure and design settings where people want to be, spaces where people can afford to live, places in which people choose to stay - in short, cities that work.

In planning, developing and building many of the world's most sustainable communities and projects, we use our breadth of expertise across our building, consulting and infrastructure practices. This means creating cross-disciplinary teams of experts that work together to embed long-term benefits into each project. Arup integrates social, economic, environmental and timeframe considerations into projects, whether new or retro-fit, to give communities a sense of social and environmental wellbeing. This rounded approach has made us the partner of choice for public and private clients around the world. At any one time, we have over 10,000 projects running concurrently around the world.

We summarise our approach in one statement: we shape a better world. This embodies our team-working, creativity and belief in sustainability. It describes our global nature, as well as recognises the significant role that we play, together with our clients and partners, in shaping new environments.

Experience in Africa

Arup has been present in Africa for almost 60 years. We have offices in Botswana, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. In addition, we have and continue to deliver projects in Angola, DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia. Arup has undergone continuous growth and expansion in Africa and our staff complement is approximately 600 people, supported by a global team of around 10,000. Throughout Arup's history in Africa, we have committed to developing local leadership, with almost 90% of that leadership coming from Africa. This is in no small measure due to the promotion of skills and knowledge between the local and international firm, which has resulted in significant contributions to the development of the built environment industry.

We have worked on more than 20,000 projects and developments in Africa including commercial buildings, mixed-use developments, airports, sports venues, bridges, highways, railways, industrial development zones, oil, gas and energy projects, hospitals, prisons, arts and cultural venues, science and technology parks, water and waste projects.
